Providing Individual Counseling in the Harrisonburg and Surrounding Area
I provide a supportive environment to listen to the issues you are facing. I offer a discounted fee for your first session because I believe it is essential that you and I both assess "fit". You may assess whether you feel comfortable working with me and whether I have the skills/training/experience to support your specific needs. I listen to you, ask you questions, tell you where I believe my skills/training/experience may meet your hopes/needs and we make a plan for treatment together.
Being Stuck; Finding Balance: Sometimes we get stuck in life and need to talk with someone we trust. Counseling, in its simplest form, provides a way to see and hear oneself in a new way and become unstuck. It may take one session or several sessions. Many of us seek balance in our busy lives. A few counseling sessions is often all it takes to rediscover and shape a plan for personal balance and wellness.
Brain/Body, Stress, Biofeedback, Trauma & Mindfulness: There is much recent research which shows how our brains and bodies get stuck along with our emotions, and that healing involves treating also the body. I am trained in mind/body therapies and breathing techniques shown very effective in treating stress and anxiety. In addition, having studied eco-therapy, I promote nature, exercise, and healthy eating as a part of the healing process.
Panic, Anxiety, Depression: You may have experienced a panic attack for the first time, or debilitating anxiety or depression. I can help you understand your experiences (anxiety and depression are normal but can be terrifying), support you through it, teach you cognitive behavioral skills, relaxation, & mindfulness techniques to cope, and preventative techniques including lifestyle changes. Medication, both traditional and alternative, can also be useful, and I suggest resources and referrals if you choose medication as a part of your coping or treatment plan.
Trauma of Abuse: I provide a safe space in which to heal from trauma from sexual or physical abuse, or other circumstances in which you have experienced trauma in your life. I have led support groups for adult female survivors of sexual abuse and understand the sensitive dynamics of dealing with family abusers or religious abusers in positions of power.
Relationships: There are the very challenging (and again surprisingly normal) times in family relationships, and peer or work relationships. I have extensive training in conflict management in families and the workplace, and enjoy coaching communication. I also enjoy providing pre-marital counseling for couples.
LGBTQ+ Support: I enjoy working with persons who are questioning or who identify as LGBTQ+.
